Injustice Is Real: A Year in Review 2025

INJUSTICE IS REAL (IIR) – A YEAR IN REVIEW 2025
Dear Injustice Is Real (IIR) Supporters, Volunteers, and Friends,
As we reflect on the past year, we recognize a period defined by progress, growth, and quiet transformation. It came with its own fair share of challenges, wins, moments of uncertainties and then clarities.
Regardless, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible impact that your support has enabled Injustice Is Real to achieve. From addressing the impunity culture to raising awareness about the child labor menace, together, we made significant strides in our mission to advocate for justice, raise awareness about pressing issues, and create positive change in communities facing hardship.
IIR through its advocacy, campaigns, and initiatives over the past year has addressed the diverse and pressing challenges confronting individuals across Nigeria. We have continued to uphold our mission by courageously lending our voice to defend the vulnerable and a voice to the voiceless.
Accomplishments -
1. International Advocacy
IIR participated in the London Roundtable Human Rights Training at the Honorable Society of Gray’s. The two-day programme strengthened capacity in documenting human rights violations and engaging international accountability mechanisms, while spotlighting critical cases such as the Yazidi genocide, the persecution of the Uyghur people, and the continued captivity of Leah Sharibu.
We carried out high-level engagements at the House of Lords which further amplified concerns around systemic human rights violations and reinforced the need for sustained global action.
2. UK Pro Bono Legal Clinic Launch
IIR Successfully launched the UK Pro Bono Legal Clinic in the UK to offer free legal services to ethnic minorities in Family Law and Immigration for beneficiaries who can’t afford legal services or do not qualify for legal aid. So far 80 beneficiaries have been supported.
Challenges -
While successfully launching the UK Pro Bono Legal Clinic and supporting over 60 beneficiaries in family and immigration matters, IIR has faced several operational and capacity challenges. These include language barriers requiring interpretation support for clients with limited English proficiency, ongoing difficulty in recruiting and retaining sufficient pro bono solicitors to meet growing demand, and limited funding to sustain and scale the clinic’s services, infrastructure, and outreach efforts.
3. New Partnerships & Pro Bono Impact:
Strengthened access to justice through strategic partnerships with the Centre for Justice, Mercy and Reconciliation (Nigeria), LawWorks, AKK Solicitors, Duncan Solicitors and Stowe Family Law. The collaboration with CJMR, has enabled IIR to understand the Nigerian Legal system better, exposing IIR to 3 major cases of alleged child defilement that we are currently in the process of appealing. In the UK, the collaborations have provided vital pro bono legal expertise, enabling us to support vulnerable Nigerians facing complex legal challenges across the UK including other nationalities. Through our UK Pro Bono Legal Clinic, we have successfully supported over 60 beneficiaries offering tailored legal guidance that brought clarity, relief, and a
clear path forward. These partnerships continue to reinforce our mission to bridge gaps in the justice system and ensure protection and representation for those often overlooked.
4. Electronic Case Management Systems (ECMS)
IIR is currently undergoing an assessment of the impact of Electronic Case Management Systems (ECMS) in Lagos, Nigeria, in collaboration with our Partner Reed Smith LLP. Our vision for this Research is to facilitate a justice system strengthened by efficiency, transparency, and accessibility through technology. It is trite that a well-structured Electronic Case Management System (ECMS) can revolutionize how cases, legal documents, and police evidence are managed, making justice traceable and accountable.
Through this research, we are analyzing the current state of electronic file management in Lagos courts and law enforcement agencies and identify areas for improvement. By studying comparative models from the UK, US, South Africa and other developing nations, we aim to provide practical pathways for building a robust, secure, and user-friendly ECMS framework in Nigeria. This initiative seeks to accelerate case resolution, improve record-keeping, and strengthen collaboration among courts, lawyers, and law enforcement, advancing digital innovation in justice delivery with Reed Smith.
5. Child Labor Menace in Nigeria
IIR Successfully raised awareness for the urgent need to tackle child Labor in Nigeria with reference to the recent reports which show 43% of children between the age group of 5-10 years are being forced into work many in dangerous conditions such as mining, quarries, domestic labor, and even conflict zones.
Urged for stronger protections, alternative livelihoods for families, and access to education, warning that without immediate intervention, the country risks long-term social and economic damage.
6. Ethics and Accountability Issues in the Nigerian Police
We raised awareness on the corruption and neglect of professional ethics of the Nigerian Police Force. Urged authorities responsible for the Nigerian Police Force to take swift action while warning that such incidents damage public trust and Nigeria's global image.
7. Police Accountability and Media Censorship
We successfully provided a nuanced exploration of the complexities surrounding police accountability and media censorship which took place on the organization’s X Space.
Engaged in discussions which emphasized the importance of legal literacy, non-violent advocacy, and the protection of fundamental freedoms.
8. Rights Awareness & Accountability Campaign
Successfully launched a powerful Jingle and educational video highlighting the everyday risks Nigerians face when asserting their rights, underscored by cases like Comfort Udoh, who was attacked for refusing to pay a bribe. The campaign focused on raising public awareness, empowering citizens with knowledge of their rights, and demanding greater accountability within law enforcement, reinforcing that no one should suffer violence for seeking justice.
9. Justice, Accountability & Fundraising for Victims:
IIR spotlighted the unresolved 2015 police shooting of Comfort Udoh, who was killed after refusing to pay a bribe, leaving her family with severe injuries, lasting trauma, and no support while the accused officer remains at large. We launched a campaign, combined with advocacy and active fundraising to provide urgent surgery, medical treatment, trauma care, and educational support for the children.
This reinforced the demand for justice, police accountability, and tangible support for victims of abuse.
Challenges -
In spotlighting the unresolved 2015 police shooting of Comfort Udoh and launching a justice and support campaign, IIR faced significant institutional and public engagement challenges. These included persistent difficulty securing meaningful engagement from the Attorney General’s office, limited responsiveness from the police regarding accountability, and challenges in mobilizing
sufficient public donations to meet urgent medical, trauma, and educational support needs for the family.
10. Campaign: Addressing Economic Injustice in Nigeria Amidst Rising Inflation
We successfully lent our voice to speak against the economic injustice in Nigeria. Created awareness on how the current economic climate in Nigeria has drastically affected the livelihoods of millions. The rising cost of living, in particular, food inflation has left many struggling to afford basic necessities.
11. Advocacy against Impunity in Nigeria:
In September, we successfully advocated against the culture of impunity in Nigeria, where the powerful often escape accountability while ordinary (poor) citizens face swift justice. Impunities ranging from the unresolved Lekki Toll-Gate shootings of October 2020 to repeated tragic incidents involving Dangote truck drivers. We have successfully, through our research and campaigns, highlighted how wealth and influence shield perpetrators, leaving victims’ families in grief and unanswered questions. We also have documented these injustices, amplifying the stories of the voiceless and demanding transparency, accountability, and equal application of the law. IIR reaffirmed that every life is sacred, and no one should be above the law. This year, we strengthened our call for a Nigeria where justice is served fairly, and the cries of the innocent are heard and acted upon.
12. YouTube Hot Stories
Throughout the year, our YouTube Hot Stories became a key platform for amplifying voices and shedding light on pressing social issues across Nigeria. From exposing injustices to highlighting stories that often go untold, these videos sparked awareness, conversations, and advocacy for change. Our content reached over 68,000 views, with over 1,000 subscribers engaging our YT community on topics like economic injustice, human rights violations, governance and accountability. Through our stories, We reaffirmed our commitment to telling the truth, empowering the voiceless, and demanding justice.
